SSH or Secure Shell is protocol for communicating with, and managing a server. Most commonly used on UNIX systems, shell is extremly "light" in bandwith requirements and data transfer as the communication is in the form of keystrokes from client to server and console messages to client from server.
Because of this it is exactly the same as if the server operator were physically at the server typing commands in directly at the command prompt.

SSH clients are available for most operating systems, including Android, Symbian (Nokia) and iOS (Apple) and the lightweight nature of the protocol makes it eminently suitable for mobile devices to be used by server managers.
